Chapter 1: The Name Buried for Thirty Years
The envelope slipped from the stranger’s hand and landed softly on the nursery floor. Nobody moved. Nobody breathed. Ethan Walker stared at the man standing before him, unable to process what he was seeing. It was like looking at his own reflection after years of hardship and pain. The stranger slowly turned toward the elderly matriarch, Margaret Walker. Her hands trembled against the edge of a chair.
“Tell them,” he said quietly. “Tell them who Gabriel really is.” Margaret shook her head immediately. “No.” The single word came out broken. The stranger laughed bitterly. “Thirty years. Thirty years of lies, and that’s still your answer?” Ethan stepped forward. “Someone explain what’s happening.” His voice echoed through the silent nursery. The stranger’s eyes softened briefly as he looked at Ethan. “We were born on the same day.” Ethan froze. “What?” Margaret closed her eyes. Tears slipped down her cheeks. “Twins,” the stranger continued. “You and I are twins.” The room erupted in shocked whispers. Ethan felt the floor disappear beneath him. His entire life, he had believed he was an only child. Yet standing before him was a man who looked exactly like him.
A man carrying the same face, the same voice, and perhaps the same blood. Then Gabriel pointed toward Margaret. “She gave me away.” Silence followed. Crushing silence. Ethan slowly turned toward his grandmother. Her trembling shoulders revealed everything before she spoke. “Your grandfather chose one child,” she whispered. “And abandoned the other.” The words struck like lightning.
Gabriel reached into his pocket and removed an old photograph. Two newborn boys. One labeled Ethan. The other Gabriel. Proof that could no longer be denied. Then Ethan noticed something else. Written on the back was a date only three weeks old. Someone had been investigating the truth recently. Someone who already knew everything. His wife.
