The silence that followed seemed to last an eternity.
No one in the room dared to breathe.
I could only hear the hum of the machinery and the regular beat of the monitor that kept ticking the clock.
Dr. Ibarra slowly laid the folder on the table next to the bed.
“Mr. Arthur Robles was an extremely prudent man,” he said in a calm voice. “Before his death he wanted to leave precise instructions so that some documents were kept by the hospital and handed over only in very special circumstances.»
Marcos tried to maintain a calm tone.
“I think there was a misunderstanding. My wife simply got involved in an accident.»
“Maybe,” the doctor replied without breaking down. “That’s why I’m here. My job is only to make sure that everything is done according to Mr. Robles ‘ will.»
I heard Carmen swallowing.
“What kind of documents are they?»
“I cannot discuss it in front of people who are not authorized.»
For the first time since I was in a coma, I felt an uncertainty in my husband’s voice.
“I am her husband.»
“I know about it.»
Dr. Ibarra paused briefly.
“But the instructions specify that the contents of the envelope will have to be shown exclusively to Mrs. Elena Robles, once she will be able to personally confirm her identity and state of consciousness.»
Silence returned to fill the room.
Marcos took a few nervous steps.
“We don’t know when he will wake up.»
«Expect.»
One word.
Firm.
Adamant.
I heard Carmen sighing impatiently.
“This is ridiculous.»
The doctor closed the folder.
“I understand you may be concerned, but my job is to respect the wishes of the patient and his family.»
His shoes slowly moved away.
The door closed.
A few seconds passed.
Then Carmen exploded.
“Did you hear? We’ll wait! We can’t afford to stand still.»
“Keep your voice down,” Marcos replied.
“If that envelope really contains something…”
“It cannot contain anything important.»
“And how can you be sure?»
No answer.
All I heard was the sound of a chair being dragged across the floor.
Marcos resumed speaking in a much lower tone.
“We must remain calm.»
“Calm down?”hissed Carmen. “That man came out of nowhere talking about secret instructions left months ago.»
“Maybe it’s just a formality.»
“What if it isn’t?»
Silence again.
Within me, however, something was changing.
For days I thought I was completely alone.
Now I knew that my father predicted that something could happen.
I didn’t know the contents of that envelope.
But I knew him.
Arthur Robles never left anything to chance.
When I was a child he always told me:
“People show their true face when they believe no one is watching them.»
I was laughing at the time.
I thought it was one of his many mysterious phrases.
Now I understood what he meant.
Marcos and Carmen continued to speak softly.
I couldn’t distinguish every word.
I just picked up fragments.
«…tomorrow…»
“…we can’t wait…”
“…no one should know…”
After a few minutes they left the room.
I finally heard the door close.
For the first time I was completely alone.
I tried to move my fingers.
The thumb just shook.
It was a tiny movement.
Almost imperceptible.
But it was enough.
My body was coming back.
Inhale slowly.
The eyelids looked heavy as stone.
It wasn’t time yet.
I had to wait.
Listen.
Understand.
Maybe an hour passed.
Or maybe just a few minutes.
I completely lost my perception of time.
Then someone came in again.
Light steps.
Number.
“Mrs. Robles?»
It was a female voice.
Nice.
“I know he probably can’t hear me.»
I recognized the tone of a nurse.
He checked the IV.
He fixed the covers.
Then he lowered his voice.
“If you can hear me … don’t be scared.»
My heart jumped into my chest.
“Dr. Ibarra asked me to personally check that no one modifies his therapy without authorization.»
I heard the sound of some cards.
“He said his father trusted him a lot.»
His words filled me with hope.
“I will do everything I can to keep you safe.»
Tears began to press behind closed eyes.
I couldn’t cry.
Not yet.
The nurse went out quietly.
That night no one came back.
The next morning the ward began to come alive.
Voice.
Cart.
Door.
Medici.
About noon I recognized Marcos ‘ voice again.
“How are you?»
“There are small positive signs,” someone replied.
“Really?»
«You. He might wake up soon.»
I felt my husband hold his breath.
“So soon?»
“It is possible.»
A long silence followed.
When the doctor came out, Marcos stood by my bed.
For several minutes he said nothing.
Then he spoke softly.
“If you really wake up … I hope you remember only the good things.»
His words left me breathless.
There was no affection.
There was fear.
Afraid that I would remember everything.
Afraid I’d heard every conversation.
Fear that the truth will finally come to light.
That’s when I made my decision.
I wouldn’t open my eyes until I was strong enough.
I wouldn’t have uttered a word without knowing who I could trust.
And most importantly…
I would no longer let anyone decide my fate.
Because whatever my father had hidden in that envelope, one thing was now certain.
He foresaw betrayal.
And he had left behind the last chance to change everything.
