CHAPTER 2: THE WOMAN WHO MADE ENEMIES

Three months after joining the Romano Foundation, Emily Carter had transformed dozens of programs for children with autism.

Parents praised her.

Teachers admired her.

And Olivia Romano absolutely adored her.

For the first time in years, Victor Romano watched his daughter laugh without fear.

But success creates enemies.

One morning, Emily arrived at work to find reporters gathered outside the foundation.

Cameras flashed.

Microphones appeared.

Someone had leaked documents accusing her of fraud.

The allegations were absurd.

According to anonymous sources, Emily had secretly redirected foundation funds into private accounts.

The media exploded.

Within hours, social media turned against her.

Victor read every accusation in silence.

Then he called his security chief.

“Find out who started this.”

Emily sat alone in her office that evening.

She had worked too hard to lose everything again.

The door opened.

Victor stepped inside.

“You believe the accusations?” she asked quietly.

Victor looked at her for several seconds.

“No.”

Emily felt tears forming.

“Why?”

Victor answered without hesitation.

“Because I know your character.”

The investigation began immediately.

And within forty-eight hours, the truth emerged.

The leak came from Vanessa Greene.

The former manager had spent months planning revenge.

But she wasn’t acting alone.

Someone far more dangerous was helping her.

Someone inside Romano Industries.

The name shocked everyone.

Michael Romano.

Victor’s younger cousin.

A man who had been part of the family business for twenty years.

Security footage, financial records, and emails revealed everything.

Michael had partnered with Vanessa.

Their plan was simple.

Destroy Emily’s reputation.

Force Victor into a public scandal.

Then convince investors that Victor was losing control of the company.

Michael wanted power.

And he was willing to destroy his own family to get it.

When confronted, he didn’t deny it.

Instead, he laughed.

“You chose a former sales clerk over blood.”

Victor’s expression remained cold.

“No.”

He stepped closer.

“I chose loyalty over greed.”

The board meeting that followed lasted six hours.

By sunrise, Michael had lost every position he held.

His shares were frozen.

His contracts terminated.

His access revoked.

Everything was gone.

As security escorted him from headquarters, he turned toward Emily.

“This isn’t over.”

Emily felt a chill.

Because she believed him.

Three nights later, her apartment was broken into.

Nothing was stolen.

Only one message was left behind.

Written across her living room wall.

YOU SHOULD HAVE STAYED FIRED.

The war wasn’t over.

It was just beginning.
